It is important to choose a pouch system that is comfortable for you.Ostomy pouch systems come in different styles and sizes, but most include: the skinbarrier, this may also be called a wafer. It is waterproof and protects the skin aroundyour stoma. It attaches the pouch to your body. And the pouch. The pouch collects thewaste. Some pouches are emptied on a regular basis, while others are thrown awayand replaced.You may choose to use a one piece pouch system which means the pouch and skinbarrier are attached as one. Or, you may choose to use a two piece system where theskin barrier sticks to your skin and the pouch is then attached to the skin barrier.When choosing a pouch system, talk to your healthcare provider about your options.There are many choices available.“When I first started out I was given the one pouch system. And then I went to thetwo-piece system. But this is a trial and error. It’s really what you’re comfortablewith.”If the pouch system you’re using is not comfortable or easy for you, ask yourhealthcare provider about trying a new kind of pouch.“Take every option you’re given. If you’re not happy, you can call the companies.They’ll send you samples.
