MyPlate: ProteinThe protein group is shown in the purple section of MyPlate. Most meats fall into this group, including beef,pork, chicken, and turkey. But fish, dry beans and peas, nuts and seeds and eggs are also found in the proteingroup. All these foods provide your body with protein, which it uses to heal and repair itself, and to buildmuscle.Foods in the protein group are generally measured in ounces. One egg, one tablespoon of peanut butter, or aquarter cup of cooked black or kidney beans can be considered a 1 ounce serving from the protein food group.Most protein portions do not come in just one ounce. For example, a small lean hamburger is about 2 to 3ounces. One small chicken breast half is 3 ounces. And one drained can of tuna is 3-4 ounces.Or keep these guidelines in mind: a serving of meat should be no larger than the palm of your hand; atablespoon of peanut butter is about the size of your thumb. Most people get more than enough food from theprotein group each day. Keep in mind, however, that many types of meats are high in saturated fat, which canraise your blood cholesterol and increase your risk of heart disease. So, make more of your choices lean.If you are an active adult female, aim for about 5 ounces of lean protein each day. Active adult men should aimfor 6 ounces of lean protein to get the nutrients needed.
